Hearing Loss and Medical Conditions. I must mention the beneficial medical implications of using hearing aids. The use of hearing aids will reduce the progression of damage that causes hearing loss. One study showed that speech understanding can progress an additional 18.5% over 5 years if left untreated. However, if treated [with hearing aids] the speech understanding will only worsen by 2.6% over 5 years. And just think, now that we are stimulating the nerves and the hearing centre in the brain, there is less shrinkage of the tissue. Studies have linked hearing loss and the associated tissue shrinkage with Alzheimer’s and Dementia, so taking corrective action reduces our risk of developing severe states of these diseases. Hearing loss is also linked to depression and anxiety, and the use of hearing aids greatly improves these symptoms.
So you can see there are a lot of benefits to hearing aids. And taking action to improve our hearing ability in the early stages of hearing loss means we are slowing down the loss as we age, which means we will enjoy the benefits of healthy hearing longer.
